The researchers were interested to see if generalized reciprocity (a form of altruism, helping a stranger after having received help oneself) was due to human social norms, or if it has an evolutionary basis. They found that rats also are capable of generalized reciprocity.

This is a useful overview of the latest thinking about empathy found in chimpanzees. There has been much debate about which characteristics are unique to humans. Empathy has been firmly held to be one of these by some. However, Dr de Waal puts very succinctly the argument that there is more to apes than perhaps we realise:
"It is well known that absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. … Apes often ignore kinship when cooperating, show remarkable levels of empathy and spontaneous assistance. The difference with human behavior may be smaller than assumed."
Keywords: Chimpanzee; Pan troglodytes; altruism; empathy.
Comment from Compassion in World Farming:
New research presents experimental evidence that chimpanzees will carry out altruistic acts, which suggests that they are capable of empathy. Research is showing us that chimpanzees have advanced emotional and cognitive capacities.
