How can I help

There are many ways that you can help improve the welfare of dairy cows and their calves:

Top 3 ways to help

  • Only buy organic, preferably Soil Association certified, milk, yoghurt, cheese and butter
  • If not buying organic, look for own-label dairy produce from supermarkets who have stopped calf-exports such as M&S and Tesco
  • Speak to the manager of your local supermarket to ask them not to stock milk from zero-grazing systems

What else can be done?

  • Encourage friends and family to buy organic dairy produce
  • Contact your local newspaper, radio and TV stations and ask them to highlight the welfare of dairy cows and their calves
  • Ask local retailers to stock more Soil Association certified dairy produce
  • Download our Compassionate Shopping Guide
  • Join Compassion in World Farming with a monthly gift or donation to support our work

Soil Association organic standards:

  • Allow cows access to pasture whenever possible
  • Feed cows a more natural diet that promotes more sustainable milk yields
  • Ban the sale of calves for export (except breeding stock), or their sale at market under one month old
