J D Wetherspoon

UK
13 million eggs per year
48, 148 hens benefited per year

J D Wetherspoon is a well-known British chain of high street free houses. Since opening in 1979 there are now 670 pubs across the country, renowned for serving good-quality, great-value food and drinks. For over a year free-range eggs have been a feature on their menu and through the Good Egg Awards, J D Wetherspoon has committed to going free-range on its sauces too, which really is great news.

Often egg products used in mayonnaise or other manufactured goods are overlooked, and by making this change J D Wetherspoon is really demonstrating how serious it is about the welfare of its laying hens.

Look out for the Food Facts Booklet in all J D Wetherspoon pubs to provide customers with information on food quality and provenance, use of premium brands, nutritional information and suppliers.

Jameson Robinson accepts the Good Egg Award for J D Wetherspoon

"As a company, we are committed to using and stocking only cage-free whole eggs for our menus. We are currently working closely with our suppliers to ensure that all supplied products are also manufactured using only cage-free eggs by the end of 2008. We are thrilled to receive a CIWF Good Egg award and believe that we are listening to our customers’ needs and demonstrating ethical responsibility."

Jameson Robinson, Food Development Manager

"JD Wetherspoon is committed to using only free-range eggs in our pubs. We work closely with our supplier, Fresh Direct, and our distribution centre in Daventry and our pubs to ensure that this standard is strictly adhered to. We are also working closely with suppliers to ensure that products supplied to us requiring eggs use only free-range in their recipes, e.g. mayonnaise, Bearnaise sauce, etc. Our objective is to be 100% free-range in status (all supplier products) by the end of 2008."
