Cairo pig cull: Compassion witnesses the slaughter

News Section Icon Published 09/06/2009

On 09 June 2009, representatives from Compassion in World Farming and WSPA were allowed to visit the notorious Bassatin slaughterhouse in Cairo to witness the slaughter of just one of the hundreds of thousands of pigs who have been culled in recent weeks in Egypt.

Our Head of Campaigns, Lasse Bruun, filmed the slaughter. Before you play this film, please be warned that this footage shows animal slaughter in an Egyptian abattoir:

Of course, thousands of the culled pigs were not sent to a slaughterhouse, but were apparently covered in caustic substances and buried alive in the desert.

This must never happen again

Compassion's "visa" campaign, directed at the Egyptian Tourism Ministry continues. We are also in direct contact with the Ministry.

On June 11, the Egyptian Chief Veterinary Officer issued an invitation to Compassion, WSPA and the World Animal Health Organisation, the OIE, to make a formal visit to Cairo. We shall take up this offer and will reiterate our demands for:

  • An end to any remaining culling of pigs
  • The implementation of the OIE's Guidelines on transport and slaughter
  • The introduction of a properly enforced Animal Protection Act in Egypt.

Take action

Please take part in our "visa" campaign - we are beginning to see results.
