BBC documentary on sentience of cows

News Section Icon Published 07/07/2010

On Wednesday 7th July on BBC 2 at 20:00 a documentary entitled The Private Life of Cows will see presenter Jimmy Doherty investigating the feelings and behaviours of cows.

He will be looking into aspects such as the hierarchy of a herd and what underlies their commonly seen behaviours.

This public exposure regarding the sentiency of cows is fantastic news following Compassion's ten-year campaign which succeeded in getting animals legally recognised as sentient beings by the EU in 1997. To recognise that animals are capable of having feelings is a fundamental requirement in order to drive future improvements to the welfare of all farmed animals.

The screening of this documentary seems even more timely in view of the recent attempts to introduce large scale 'zero-grazing' dairy farms to the UK. We urge everyone to watch this documentary and tell others about it.
