Pigs Burned Alive? Authorities Respond

News Section Icon Published 29/07/2013

On 26th July Compassion reported on shocking footage that appeared to show pigs in Russia being burned alive.

Compassion liaised with the World Organisation for Animal Health (also known as the OIE), asking them to contact the Russian Authorities. We also contacted Russian Embassies across Europe and asked our supporters to contact Embassies as well. As always the response from our supporters was magnificent.

The OIE acted swiftly and decisively, contacting the Russian Authorities to try to get a clear picture of what had happened and how it could be prevented from happening again. They have received assurance from the Russians that 'the situation has been brought under control'.

Compassion will of course continue to monitor for further developments, as this needs to be verified, and take action if necessary. But a direct response from the Authorities is a positive step in the right direction and hopefully signals the end of this appalling cruelty.
