This report, compiled by Compassion in World Farming, summarises inspections carried out over the last four years in pig farms in 21 Member States by the Food and Veterinary Office of the European Commission. The report reveals widespread breaches of the EU law that requires pigs to be given enrichment materials and that bans routine tail docking.
Outlines the results of investigations which found widespread breaches of important parts of EU law on the welfare of pigs. Compassion calculates that two thousand million pigs would have enjoyed better welfare if the EU’s pig sector had complied with the laws on enrichment and tail docking since they came into force in 2003.

In 2013 Compassion in World Farming investigated pig farms in six Member States: Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Cyprus and Poland. We visited 45 farms. All but one of these farms were breaking important parts of EU law on the welfare of pigs (the Pigs Directive). This summary report shows the reality of life for pigs farmed in Europe.
