Sainsbury’s received Compassion in World Farming’s ‘Most Improved Supermarket’ and ‘Best Volume Retailer’ for its performance in our latest Compassion in World Farming UK Supermarket Survey 2007, which benchmarks well-known British retailers on farm animal welfare.
Conducted every two years, the survey is based on industry knowledge and scientific research and shows that between 2006 and 2007, Sainsbury’s made major improvements to its farm animal welfare policies and scored higher than its other high-volume competitors.
Dr Lesley Lambert, Director of Research and Education at Compassion in World Farming said: ‘Out of all participating supermarkets, Sainsbury’s has made the most significant progress in farm animal welfare since we conducted our last survey. It has increased research spending on animal welfare and improved its ethical credentials with some major moves on animal welfare policy and continued development of its animal welfare standards.’
As the highest scoring volume retailer (those supermarkets with significant market share by sales volume) Sainsbury’s also won the award for ‘Best Volume Retailer’ 2007, beating Asda, Tesco and Morrisons.
It has become the first of the big four supermarkets to commit to going cage-free on all shell eggs by 2010 earning it a Good Egg Awardin March 2007 and through the supermarket survey it has also committed to going cage-free on all own label products containing egg by 2012.
