Support the Big Move

Even with the ban on the barren battery cage taking effect on 1st January 2012 across the EU – the future of our laying hens is still under threat. Industry estimates suggest 50 million hens may still be in the illegal barren battery systems. Help us eradicate the cruelty of these cages throughout Europe, in full and for good.

The ban

The barren battery cage is in force across the EU from 1st January 2012. This is one of the most significant steps forward for farm animal welfare ever taken. Please make a donation today and help us ensure this historic piece of legislation is implemented and rigorously enforced in every EU country.

There must be no excuses.

Despite being given 12 years to prepare for the barren battery cage ban, some countries still are not ready – and millions of hens across Europe are confined in these cages. We cannot let this continue.

The cruelty must stop.

Barren battery cages confine laying hens in small wire cages with less space than an A4 sheet of paper to stand in. These crowded and unacceptable conditions cause immense psychological and physical suffering and leave hens unable to exercise or to even stretch out their wings. These cages must be abolished. Please support the ban by making a donation today.

Please support our campaign by making a donation of whatever you can afford to help Compassion take our fight to every single one of the 27 EU ministers responsible for enforcing the barren battery cage ban. Over the next few months our resources will be stretched. Your donation will help make it clear to key decision-makers across Europe: when it comes to ending cruel factory farming practices, there can be no excuses.
