On 20 March CIWF celebrated the first ever winners of its European Good Egg Awards at the International Press Centre, Residence Palace, Brussels.
Speakers included Belgian animal welfare group GAIA, Andrea Gavinelli (Head of Animal Welfare at the European Commission), Roland Bonney (Food Animal Initiative) and Neil Parish MEP, Chair of the European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee.
CIWF’s Food Policy Officer, Rowen West-Henzell said: ‘As it’s the first time we’ve run these awards I think the results we’ve had are fantastic and we hope to help considerably more hens out of cages with it next year. This really is just the tip of the iceberg.’
Three representatives from Google flew over from California to collect their award, and other winners from France, Belgium, Holland and the UK were also present.
Collectively the winners have helped over 5 million hens out of cages (based on an average production of 270 eggs per year per hen in cage-free systems).
Take a look at the award winners page in more detail.
