Sodexho, the world’s second largest catering and food service firm, has announced it will go cage-free on all the shell eggs it uses in Belgium.
The company, which supplies large catering contracts in Belgium and around the world, said the decision was in part due to the recent Eurobarometer survey which showed that animal welfare affects the consumption patterns of European consumers.

Belgian member of the European Coalition for Farm Animals (ECFA) GAIA said: ‘We are delighted with Sodexho Belgium's decision not to use shell eggs from caged-hens anymore. Sodexho is the first big catering service that has switched to shell eggs which have been produced in a more animal-friendly way. They follow the example of some Belgian supermarkets: Makro, Colruyt, LIDL and Delhaize. GAIA hopes other supermarkets, catering services and egg processing companies will also follow.’
