2008 Award Winners - Hampshire County Council

UK

600,000 eggs per year
Over 2000 hens per year

Michael Woodhall accepts the Good Egg Award for Hampshire County CouncilAll Hampshire County Council's catering is free-range including all schools, staff catering, residential units and social services units. This covers 32 secondary schools and 447 primary schools as part of the largest local education authority caterer in the south of England. They are working on removing all caged egg ingredient at the moment. The council has worked closely with food service company 3663 to make these changes possible.

"Hampshire County Council is very proud indeed to be the first County Council in the country to win a Good Egg Award. It really highlights the importance we place on providing sustainable healthy school meals and supporting the rural economy. The effective partnerships in place to make this new initiative work are also testament to why the County Council now leads the way in the public sector procurement of local food. Locating a Hampshire-based farm capable of supplying in excess of 600,000 eggs per year has required a committed and dedicated effort from Hampshire County Supplies, which should be highly commended and we are delighted to have found Fluffetts Farm of Fordingbridge who are able to respond to our challenge."
Cllr Michael Woodhall, Hampshire County Council Executive Member for Economic Development
