REWE Group Austria

140 million eggs per year
518,500 hens benefited per year

REWE Group is Europe’s 4th largest retailer, existing in 14 different countries. REWE Group Austria is winning a Good Egg Award for going cage-free across its three major chains: Billa supermarkets, Merkur hypermarkets and Penny discount stores. 13 years ago Billa was the first supermarket in Austria to end the sale of caged eggs. Today all of their whole eggs and eggs used in their bakery shops are barn, free-range or organic.

Alfred Matousek, REWE Group Austria: 'We are very proud of winning this award, as it acknowledges our engagement as a first mover in Austria and our commitment to sustainable strategies and developments. We started with selling only cage-free eggs at our BILLA stores as the first supermarket in Austria 13 years ago. Since the end of the year 2006, we have this policy in all our markets – that means also in our MERKUR hypermarkets and our PENNY discount stores.'
