Founded in 1980 as one small store in Austin, Texas, Whole Foods Market is now the world's leading retailer of natural and organic foods, with 194 stores in North America and six Fresh & Wild stores in the UK. It is dedicated to stringent quality standards, and committed to sustainable agriculture.
In the states and in the UK, it only offers shoppers cage-free eggs. This standard has been extended to its baked goods and prepared foods, which are now also made using only cage-free eggs.
We wanted to award Whole Foods Market for its commitment to laying hen welfare as part of its wider work on animal welfare through its not-for-profit Animal Compassion Foundation.
The flagship High Street Kensington Whole Foods Market store is set to open in London in June 2007.
