The Campaign in Europe
Compassion in World Farming works hard to influence decision-makers in the EU. Many MEPs are in favour of improving conditions for animals in transport and have voted to impose an overall limit on journey times. However the final decisions on farm animals rest with the Council of Ministers.
Opposition from some quarters
Unfortunately the Agriculture Ministers from individual states who make up the Council have deferred decisions on a package of reforms, including journey times, until 2011.They have adopted some reforms that offer more training and certification for drivers by 2009 but there is no guarantee that these will be fully enforced in every country.
Lobbying for review
Compassion in World Farming will continue to lobby to bring forward the review of the EU Transport Regulations. The crucial areas of journey length, rest times and stocking densities must be considered as soon as possible. We would like to see a higher age limit at which animals can be transported over long distances.
The European Coalition for Farm Animals
Compassion in World Farming leads the European Coalition for Farm Animals which campaigns Europe-wide to improve the welfare of animals transported live across the continent.
The global campaign is putting animal welfare high on the agenda.
