What is happening globally?
The international campaign is focussing on bodies such as the World Animal Health Organisation (OIE) and the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The aim is to establish a legal basis for global standards of animal welfare and to keep these issues high on the agenda.
Global standards on animal welfare
The World Animal Health Organisation has introduced standards governing the welfare of farm animals during transportation and slaughter. These form a voluntary code and as such are not legally enforceable but they may eventually form the basis of legislation in countries where there is currently no regulation. Their existence demonstrates a global concern on these issues.
Trade and animal welfare standards
Standards governing the live transport of animals by sea and land, as well as their slaughter have been unanimously adopted by the World Animal Health Organisation. We hope that this will prevent the issue of animal welfare being sidelined in discussions with the World Trade Organisation.
Compassion in World Farming co-ordinates its lobbying with more than a hundred animal welfare groups worldwide and supports groups campaigning against long distance animal transport in their own countries.
