European Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards

On 20th October Compassion held its European Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards on the 1st floor of the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Some 40 organisations from eight countries across Europe were awarded for their commitment to improving the lives of animals by sourcing only higher welfare eggs, chicken, pig meat or dairy produce.
Awards were presented in four categories:
- Good Egg
- Good Chicken
- Good Dairy - which was introduced this year
- Leadership in Pig Welfare, exclusive to 2011
GOOD DAIRY AWARD
The Good Dairy Award was introduced at the European Awards and winners were Ben & Jerry’s Europe, Beemster Cheese from north Holland, as well as Les 2 Vaches who received a Good Dairy Commendation for their strong commitment to improving the welfare of their dairy cows across the Basse-Normandie region.
GOOD CHICKEN AWARD
Good Chicken Award winners were Les Fermiers de Loué in France, Ikea Germany and the well known University of Paris-Sud d’Orsay, as well as Italy’s largest retailer Coop Italia who won an award for their commitment to improving the welfare of their own-brand chickens, which is set to benefit millions of chickens every year.
GOOD EGG AWARD
Good Egg Award winners were: Guschlbauer Backwaren, Lotus, Club Med, Lesieur, Les Fermiers de Loué, Marseille (sodexo), Steinhaus, Zum Dorfkrug, Vapiano, Joey’s Pizza, Dussmann, Sonnen Bassermann (Heinz), Konditorei Junge, Brandt, Studierendenwerk Koblenz, Studentenwerk Dortmund, Studentenwerk Kassel, Studentenwerk Osnabrück, Studentenwerk Aachen, Studentenwerk Dresden, Bundesanstalt Technisches Hilfswerk, Studentenwerk Schleswig-Holstein, Studentenwerk München, Norma, tegut, Il Mulino Bianco, Pavesi, Council of Cremona, Studler, HEMA, Ben & Jerry’s

LEADERS IN PIG WELFARE
Rivalea (Australia) Pty Ltd – one of Australia’s leading integrated Agri-food companies and largest piggery was invited by Compassion to attend the European ceremony to receive a Leadership in Pig Welfare Award for their decision to remove sow stalls and move to group housing by 2014 – ahead of voluntary Australian legislation for 2017.
The French charcuterie brand Thierry Schweitzer won the Pig Leadership award for their commitment and innovation in the field of animal welfare. Their high standards of production include open sheds with deep straw bedding or free-range farms; freedom of movement for the sows and no painful mutilations for their piglets.
