Waitrose is our Most Compassionate Supermarket (2009-10). They scored the highest in almost all categories in the survey. They are clearly committed to improving life for all the animals in their supply chain. Their commitment to improving baseline standards across their entire range as well as the leadership they demonstrate in their premium offer is a fantastic example of responsible and compassionate retailing. For their Good Chicken Award they are committed to converting all fresh, frozen and ingredient chicken to higher welfare by the end of the year.

Sainsbury’s are the UK’s second largest food retailer, serving over 19 million customers every week, with a long history of working with British farmers and growers, this company was this year named the UK’s leading Freedom Food retailer. They are the best of the big four retailers – sourcing the highest volume of higher welfare food, please put your hands together for this year’s Best Volume Retailer.

Morrison’s are the supermarket who has made the biggest improvement in their sourcing, based on the results from our last two supermarket surveys.

The Metropolitan Police have been rewarded a well deserved Good Egg Award as they feed only cage free eggs to more than 50,000 staff members every day.

The NUS Services offer core services in purchasing, commercial development and marketing to Students Unions throughout the country and have committed to sourcing cage–free eggs only by the end of the year.

Accent Catering’s first Good Egg Award, a catering company with a varied client base including the education, business and industry sectors who switched to Free-Range eggs across their entire operation.

Leith’s at the QEII was founded by Prue Leith in 1972 with the motto ‘simply better’. A member of Compass Group this catering company sources only free range eggs.

The MET Office, a national institution, predicting the weather and keeping us informed on a daily basis. As a member of Compass Group, they source only free range eggs.

Coca Cola need no introduction, being the most famous household brand in the world. They are committed to sourcing cage-free across their entire catering operation. As a member of Compass Group, they source only free range eggs.

Pieminister area a family business specialising in making handmade gourmet pies with only free range eggs.

Garrets are the leading Marine Catering Management Company who providing on-board catering services to ship owners and managers. Operating in global markets, they have achieved our first international Good Egg and Good Chicken awards.

Battersea Dogs and Cats Home are a national institution taking in and caring for around 12,000 dogs and cats each year, sourcing new homes and educating the public about responsible pet ownership. They have been awarded for helping chickens as well as cats and dogs.

Pride Catering cater to the business, industry, education and healthcare sectors throughout the south of England, committed to sourcing only free-range eggs across their entire operation.

Sodexo Prestige are a customer focused catering management company specialising in the UK leisure sector who have committed to sourcing only free range eggs across their entire operation.

The Scottish Government is responsible for the governing and public services on behalf of the people of Scotland. They have been awarded for setting an example and sourcing only free-range eggs.

The Co-operative are a retailer with responsible business practices at its core. They have been awarded for their commitment to sourcing higher welfare chicken in both their fresh and frozen offer by the end of the year.

Higgidy Pies won a Good Egg Award last year and are showing ongoing commitment to ethical sourcing, a baker and maker of handmade pies containing only free range chicken.

Marks & Spencer are one of the UK’s leading retailers sourcing higher welfare chicken only across their fresh, frozen and ingredient ranges.

Virgin Trains are a previous Good Egg Award winner dedicated to leading the way in terms of sustainable transport, serving only free range chicken across their catering operation.

It’s time for fresh thinking

Factory farming is by far the biggest cause of animal cruelty on the planet. Billions of animals are crammed, caged and confined. We can’t go on this way. Factory farming is not the way forward - it’s time for fresh thinking.

Compassion in World Farming’s Food Business Team has pioneered engagement with some of the world’s top food companies - retailers, producers and manufacturers. The companies we work with are an integral part of the drive towards a more ethical and sustainable food supply.

We have run our flagship scheme, the Good Egg Awards, since 2007 and this year we launched the brand new Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards. They build on the success of the Good Egg Awards to celebrate a wider range of the fantastic work being done by leading food retailers, suppliers and producers to ensure that farm animals are reared more humanely.

Good eggs, real impact

Our latest batch of ‘Good Eggs’ include Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, The Metropolitan Police, Sodexo Prestige, The NUS Services and The Met Office, a member of Compass Group.

In the barren battery cage system, laying hens are unable to fully stretch their wings. Standing wingtip to wingtip, the projected 25 million cage-free hens that are set to benefit from the policies of our Good Egg Award winners would stretch half way around the world.

Changing the lives of millions of meat chickens

Our inaugural Good Chicken Award winners included Waitrose, The Co-operative Food, Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer, Virgin Trains, Garrets International (a shipping company), IKEA, Pieminister and Higgidy Pies.

The Good Chicken Award goes to companies that are making tangible improvements to the lives of chickens reared for meat. The UK winners alone have exceeded our European target of 100 million broiler chickens living in higher welfare systems, with over 174 million broiler chickens living in more humane environments as a result of our winners’ policies.

Expanding team, international impact

Our aim is to place farm animal welfare at the heart of the food industry. The generosity of our supporters is making this possible. Put simply, the commitment from our supporters has allowed us to invest in new, specialist staff and resources. As a direct result, we are now able to drive change internationally and across a wider range of businesses: changing the lives of millions more animals and bringing our vision of a world without factory farming one step closer to reality.

But there is still much to do. Over the next five years, we have set challenging targets to improve welfare standards throughout the key markets of France, Italy, Germany and the UK. The good news is that the food industry is receptive; momentum is gathering. Together, we are at the forefront of a drive to give farm animals a better life and transform the future of food production.
