Food Business Manager (Fish)

Nineteen months, fixed term contract

Location: Godalming, Surrey

Salary: £30,000 to £38,000 (dependent on experience)

Compassion in World Farming is the leading international farm animal welfare charity, campaigning to end factory farming and improve the lives of farm animals through advocacy, lobbying for legislative change, and positive engagement with the global food industry. Our established Food Business programme aims to raise baseline standards for farm animals by securing commitments, ensuring compliance and facilitating implementation of higher welfare policies and practices. Our work is based on scientific evidence and best practice and as such we are recognised as the credible partner on farm animal welfare to the major food retailers, food service companies and manufacturers.

We recently launched our resources for five key farmed fish species (Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, European sea bass, gilthead sea bream and pangasius) to aid our discussions with companies and provide a framework for change towards higher welfare production and slaughter of farmed fish. Over the next 2 years, we aim to secure policies by leading retailers and food service companies on humane rearing and slaughter practices, and work with companies on measuring the welfare of farmed fish. We also aim to further engage with fisheries on incorporating higher welfare policies and practices.

The role of Food Business Manager focused on fish welfare is a new and exciting role within Compassion, helping to ensure fish welfare policies and practices are adopted within the corporate sustainable supply chain of the world’s leading food businesses, and fisheries. The role offers a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact for farmed and wild-caught fish within a dynamic team and influential organisation.

The right candidate will be commercially astute and have a good working knowledge of the supply chain management of global fish producers. Will have significant account management and new business development experience, with a technical knowledge or understanding of the importance of fish welfare within the fish production cycle. They will need to hold their own in challenging situations and make the most of the smallest opportunities to drive change.

Compassion in World Farming is located in bright, modern offices; just 2 minutes walk from Godalming mainline station (45 minutes from London Waterloo).
