Research Manager, Fish Welfare Food Business

Nineteen months, fixed term contract

Location: Godalming, Surrey

Salary: £30,000 to £36,000 (dependent on experience)

Compassion in World Farming is the leading international farm animal welfare charity, campaigning to end factory farming and improve the lives of farm animals through advocacy, lobbying for legislative change, and positive engagement with the global food industry. Our established Food Business programme aims to raise baseline standards for farm animals by securing commitments, ensuring compliance and facilitating implementation of higher welfare policies and practices. Our work is based on scientific evidence and best practice and as such we are recognised as the credible partner on farm animal welfare to the major food retailers, food service companies and manufacturers.

We recently launched our resources for five key farmed fish species (Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, European sea bass, gilthead sea bream and pangasius) to aid our discussions with companies and provide a framework for change towards higher welfare production and slaughter of farmed fish. Over the next 2 years, we aim to secure policies by leading retailers and food service companies on humane rearing and slaughter practices, and work with companies on measuring the welfare of farmed fish.

The role of Research Manager (fish welfare) in the Food Business team has recently become vacant, allowing for the new recruitment. The role offers a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact for farmed and wild-caught fish within a dynamic team and influential organisation.

The right candidate will bring both scientific rigour and excellent knowledge of fish production, slaughter and welfare in food production to the role. They will have a strong commercial awareness and a solid understanding of the food industry to be able to apply insights from research in a business setting. They will be able to develop multiple workflows to deadline and within budget, and have a problem solving ‘can do’ attitude. They will also thrive in presenting scientific evidence to different stakeholders through a language they can relate and understand.

Compassion in World Farming is located in bright, modern offices; just 2 minutes walk from Godalming mainline station (45 minutes from London Waterloo).
