The Factory Farming Song
The 1960s is a decade renowned for short skirts and flower power. From The Beatles to the Stones and from mini-skirts to Mini cars, many people look back fondly on a revolutionary, turbulent time. Sadly, the sixties is also the decade when factory farming really came to prominence. Compassion in World Farming was founded in 1967 as a direct response to the worrying trend towards more intensive systems of animal farming.
We recently became aware of this propaganda video which seems to have been made in the sixties by little known pop group, The Ladybugs, in an attempt to draw attention to the benefits of factory farming and to make it “cool”.
Did they really try to make factory farming cool in the 1960s?

Looking back in anger
With the benefit of hindsight, we know that birds of a feather flocking together cheek to cheek in barren battery cages is one of the cruelest of all human inventions. After some four decades of campaigning, Compassion in World Farming has hopefully ensured that the barren battery cage for laying hens will soon be confined to the pages of history throughout Europe.
The rest of the world has moved on from the sixties and now it is time to wave goodbye to Factory Farming as well. Let’s end it together, starting today.
