2008 Award Winners - Metropolitan Borough of Wirral

UK

152,000 eggs per year
560 hens per year

Steve Foulkes accepts the Good Egg Award for Metropolitan Borough of WirralThe Metropolitan Borough of Wirral's catering is already free-range including all schools catered for by the council. A local resident and supporter of Compassion in World Farming Marian Hussenbux began lobbying the council with friends by writing letters. After a little persuasion the council decided to change its policy.

"Wirral Council recognises it's duty to the Council Tax Payer to achieve efficiencies and deliver value for money, but evidence indicates that the difference in price for the use of Free Range Eggs is acceptable to the people of Wirral in the light of the overwhelming animal welfare issues involved"
Ray Williams, Corporate Procurement Manager
