THE PIG ISSUE: ENDING CUTS & CRATES
You can campaign for pigs with our toolkit: Download (1.2MB Zip)
The majority of Europe’s 240 million pigs annually slaughtered for meat are farmed intensively, in horrendous and often illegal conditions.
The situation now:
- The majority of piglets have their tails docked, teeth clipped and are castrated, often without anaesthetic
- Pregnant sows can be confined to barren crates, unable to even turn around
- At all ages many are kept in barren environments with little or no enrichment such as straw or similar materials.
This has to stop. Compassion in World Farming wants an end to these rearing practices, and for all pigs to be treated with compassion and respect.
A Compassionate future
Progressive farms are leading the way in higher welfare pig production. Higher welfare farming practices show that it is possible to avoid painful cuts and confining crates, even in commercial settings.
We believe that pigs should be farmed outdoors in well-managed free-range systems. If land is at a premium, they may be kept indoors in well-ventilated barns with ample space, daylight and appropriate bedding to comfort and reduce boredom.
With your help we can make higher welfare a reality for all of Europe’s pigs.
Get active for pigs today
In the toolkit you will find resources to help you get involved in our campaign to end cuts and crates. There is information to answer all your questions about pig rearing, Compassion’s work as well as information on what supermarkets are doing and what to look out for when buying pork. Be informed so you can inform the public.
The toolkit will also give you plenty of ideas on how to spread the word, including a handy leaflet to inform others. And for those who want to get straight down to business, there is an EU Commission lobbying postcard (a printed version of our online action), requesting better enforcement of current legislation.
