Government must act on abattoirs

News Section Icon Published 09/02/2015

A shocking undercover film has been released from a butcher’s abattoir which shows farm animals being kicked, punched and thrown around. Worryingly, it appears that some of the animals in the film have not been stunned effectively. EU and UK law requires all animals to be stunned before slaughter, so that they don’t feel pain when they are killed. The footage was obtained by Hillside Animal Sanctuary.

This follows another deeply shocking investigation released last week. Yet again, we are saddened to see such shocking cruelty.

This is not an isolated case. Between 2009 and 2011 Animal Aid filmed in nine UK slaughterhouses, in eight out of the nine they documented animals being abused, including being: kicked, punched, burnt, beaten and given electric shocks with stunning tongs.

Philip Lymbery, our CEO, said: “It’s a scandal that despite repeated exposés, the government has not taken effective action. The government needs to take urgent steps to ensure all slaughter is humane.”

Take action

Sadly, brutality towards animals can happen in any slaughterhouse. We are supporting Animal Aid in their call to make slaughterhouse CCTV mandatory. They have reached more than 100,000 signatures which means the issue will be considered for a government debate.
