Compassion in World Farming was delighted to be a co-sponsor of an important conference in Morocco (19-21 May 2011).
The CLIMATE CHANGE, AGRI-FOOD, FISHERIES AND ECOSYSTEMS conference featured a global line-up of expert speakers, including Compassion's Director of Public Affairs, Joyce D'Silva.
Joyce gave a plenary presentation on The Meat Crisis: Ethical Farming, Healthy Food and a Sustainable Future . This echoed the title of the recent book Joyce co-edited with Professor John Webster.
Joyce reports that the conference delegates, the majority from Africa, supported her call for an end to factory farming and a reduction in meat consumption. She says, "Compassion has worked productively with our UK and European partners for many years. It's time to join hands with leaders in Asia and Africa to develop policies for the future of agriculture, where the welfare of farm animals is protected, alongside the environment and the livelihoods of small-scale farmers in developing countries."
